Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World.

This is my favourite song. Actually, this and “You Are My Sunshine” are my favourite songs. Everyone knows this one, so it should be fairly obvious why I wish I wrote this song. The lyrics are simple, yet so powerful. Sometimes, simplicity is key.

Why is this so powerful to me?

Because of the softness and beauty and the genuine awe of the world and life that the lyrics convey, and yet I get this terrible sadness from this song. I don’t exactly know why, I think part of it is these beautiful lyrics with the contrast of such a sombre voice.

What A Wonderful World

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom, for me and you
and I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue, and clouds of white
the bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
and I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
they’re really saying I love you.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
they’ll learn much more than I’ll never know
and I think to myself, what a wonderful world
yes I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

Favourite line:

“I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
they’ll learn much more than I’ll never know.”

I feel a terrible sadness in this line, even though it’s a fantastic idea and our children should be smarter than us.

Also, this is Joey Ramone’s cover of it, which I love. Careful of the 90’s kids though. You’ll know them when you see them.
