Songs I Wish I’d Written.

Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have.

There are so many Nine Inch Nails songs that fit in my little storage box of songs I fucking wish I was able to write, picking just one was nigh impossible. However, this is definitely among my favourite Nine Inch Nails songs.

Why is this a song I wish I’d written?

The lyrics are front and centre for this song. Most of the NIN songs of this ilk speak to me deeply, as though I actually *did* write the lyrics. They’re powerful and emotive, but like my last “Songs I Wish I’d Written”, so very simple. To say so little, so simply, and evoke that kind of reaction is amazing, but it’s also in how Trent Reznor sings with his heart. The music is more haunting ambience, but it is in total compliment of the lyrics, the perfect blend of poetic lyrics and atmospheric sound.

Lyrics:

I still recall the taste of your tears
echoing your voice just like, the ringing in my ears
my favourite dreams of you still wash ashore
scraping through my head ‘till I don’t want to sleep
any more

[Chorus:]
You make this all go away
you make this all go away
I’m down to just one thing
and i’m starting to scare myself
you make this all go away
you make this all go way
I just want something
I just want something I can never have

You always were the one to show me how
back then I couldn’t do the things that I can do now
this thing is slowly taking me apart
gray would be the colour if I had a heart

Come on, tell me

[Chorus]

In this place it seems like such a shame
though it all looks different now
I know it’s still the same
everywhere I look you’re all I see
just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be

Come on, tell me!

[Chorus]

Just a simply powerful song, that always makes me think “fuck”. It’s one of those things that pushes me to write more, and cut the fat from the message and still be powerful and poignant.

Hope you guys are inspired too.
